Why I Volunteer: Dr. Phil McGroin

For those of you whom I have not yet met, my name is Jason. ‘Round these parts they call me Ol’ Jas. I was first introduced to the sport of roller derby by a co-worker. Her name was Jasmine. We hit it off with some small talk about music and she seemed like a very cool and cultured woman-of-the-world. Little did I know that she had an alter-ego – Sweet N. Lowdown. We worked together at The Angry Chef in Greenbrier and when she told me what she did with roller derby, in the back of my mind, I’m thinking “This girl weighs like 38 pounds….wtf?”. So I came out to a bout and was BLOWN AWAY. Watching the little kids go ape everytime “Sweet N. Lowdown” was called out as lead jammer (which was like every 2:30) was enough to get me coming back.

Fast-forward to, say, early winter 2008. I have known Bev for easily 15 years. We went to high school together and if you get her drunk she may tell you the story of how I “came out of my shell”. On second thought, get me drunk and I’ll tell you; last time she relived the memory it was rather anticlimactic. At any rate, I was floored when she recently told me she was part of the DDG. When potential openings for announcers arose, she naturally thought of me and my irresistable charm, quick wit, magnetic charisma and rugged good looks. Oh, and modesty. I am very modest.

So, through a series of meet-and-greets at neighborhood bars I slowly began to immerse myself into the world of Roller Derby. My first “real” time spent with the team took place in November? for the Chesapeake Parade. What an event! Looking back on it, my favorite part of that night was just standing around before the fact, meeting everybody – telling jokes, shaking hands and kissing babies, rubbing elbows, hob-knobbing and shmoozing. Afterward at the Lazy Horse was a blast, too. I love the comraderie this league displays so freely and to be blindly accepted into that was deeply motivating.

Fast-forward to about right now. You can find me at practices, meetings, etc. When I’m not spinning TV Game Show themes, I spend a lot of time at practices taking notes on what these ladies do, and why they do it. I feel like my role in this organization is, first and foremost, to be informed. Something as mundane as “extension of arms over the head relieves the diaphragm” can potentially benefit me if some kid asks me “why do they do that?’

The main reason I am here is because I believe in what these women are doing. I want nothing more than to see this sport blossom into a nationwide sensation. They put so much hard work and effort into what they do and that, in itself, is inspiring. I also believe that what they do is especially empowering to women across the world. It’s a beautiful thing to see so many different types of badass broads essentially collaborating for the same cause. Personally, I think there is a dire need for sports to regain a certain amount of integrity and the charitable causes that the DDG, and other similar leagues, have been a part of are of inestimable value to communities all across America and beyond.

I applaud these women now as I did at my first bout and I am truly honored to be a part of this organization.

Derby Tripping: Carolina

Derby Tripping – Carolina

by Old Skool Beatdown

April 11th, 2009 was a date to live in infamy. That day, the public witnessed two titans of the East duke it out at J. S. Dorton Arena in Raleigh, NC to see #3 Philly Liberty Belles take on #6 Carolina All Stars in a double hitter. This was an event that The Dominion Derby Girls were not about to miss!

We left Portsmouth in a caravan of about four cars headed by Fresh Meat Laura. What was supposed to be a three and a half hour trip turned into a four hour one thanks to a cheeky GPS and a confused Fresh Meat.

Fortunately, we arrived just in time for the introductions and to grab a spot around the track. I immediately found Paris Kills and Raven Darkhold (my beloved Derby wife) from The River City Rollergirls and sat with them during the introductions. To my surprise, Nigel Tuffnails – a former Dominion Head Referee and now a part of the Charlotte Rollergirls – showed
his handsome face and broken foot. He’s such a fantastic man!

First the night’s Officiating Staff was introduced, followed by visiting Philly and then the Carolina Rollergirls. Now, if you haven’t been to Dorton arena in Raleigh, this place is big and concrete with a fantastic window design that
bellows in the sunlight so that a lot of the times, the staff has to throw on the sunglasses. It’s the kind of place I wish our League could skate in.

Time for the bout! Philly starts off with a bang and pretty much keeps that momentum going for most of the first half with the score 47-10 at the half. Carolina tried to rally in the second, but Philly pretty much it under control. Final score, 85-46 Philly.

After the Philly bout, the Carolina Bootleggers took on The Honky Tonk Heartbreakers of the Texas Rollergirls out of Austin, TX as part of the second bout of the double hitter. Both teams brought the action, though at the end, it was Heartbreakers breaking the hearts of the Bootleggers with a close
final score of 79-72.

The Dominion crew rounded out their night at Tir Na Nog in Downtown Raleigh with some dark beers, good food, a horrible cover band, and Shepard’s Pie ending up in an ear.

A big thanks goes out to FM Laura for braving the horror-movie fog and
suicide deer attempts to deliver the rest of the sleeping car back to the VA safely.

It was an honor and a pleasure to watch two very
skilled and talented teams duke it out in front of my eyes and I
cannot wait to see it again.

Derby Spawn!

Since so many of us are moms, sometimes we bring the kids along for the fun. It’s inevitable! Luckily, we’re family friendly! Sometimes you’ll see our kids on the sidelines at practice, coloring at a meeting, or participating in events & fundraisers.
This was back in March when Bam Bam, Thunder Lips, and myself brought our offspring along for a derby field trip to the fire station down the street from the rink. We were looking for EMTs for our season opener, and we ended up getting a tour of the fire station! (Yes, including the fire truck & ambulance!) Even though we ended up not recruiting any EMTs, the kids had a blast!

I guess there are some perks for the derby spawn…

Happy Mother’s Day to all the hot mamas out there!

League Member & Fresh Meat of the Month – May 2009

Member of the Month – The Deuce

I nominate The Deuce as May’s Member of the Month. When I first met him, he wouldn’t have anything to do with Derby. The past few months, however, he’s stepped up with Announcing duties, became one of the key members of the Sponsorship Committee, has been to almost every practice helping out either with spinning some tunes for us to skate to or being a human punching bag, and by just being there to support. He’s also hooked us up with the members of the band he’s in, Star 33, to help them play at some of our events (Lazy Horse fundraiser) and the DDG to come help some of theirs (Twilight DVD release); all of them very successful. He’s always around to lend a helping hand and I’m confident that his venture to the Dark Side as a Referee will be successful. Plus, his Field Days rock!!!

Joey has a lot to offer the Dominion Derby Girls whether it be behind the mic, behind the whistle, or behind the scenes roping in some sponsors!

Amber is pictured on the far left.

What her teammates had to say:

I nominate Fresh Meat Amber for FMOM. That girl skates until she is about to die. I have seen alot of improvement since she joined a few months ago. She comes out to every single event we have and is not afraid to spread the word of the DDG.
