Of course you do! Life is better on eight wheels!
The Dominion Derby Girls hold open recruitment several times a year for. First, our league offers a "tenderizing" course meant to prepare potential skaters for basic roller derby skating. These classes are once a week for five weeks. Next, we will hold our intestive three hour boot camp session. This session introduces our fresh meat to the more advanced skating necessary to play roller derby. Once you have completed boot camp, you will move on to our eight week Fresh Meat training program.
The first step? Attend our Boot Camp Orientation meeting! There you will meet our veterans and learn what it means and what is required to become a part of the greatest sport in Hampton Roads!

So you're ready to attend boot camp but see that it's a couple of months away. We suggest that you begin conditioning your body for what lies ahead by starting some of the following activities:
SKATE! Order your skates and protective gear and get to as many open skate sessions as possible. There is nothing better to ensure your success as a Fresh Meat than having confidence on your skates. The only thing that builds that confidence is skating. If you are considering skating outdoors, great! BUT - you will want to buy a separate set of wheels than what you intend to use at the rink. Concrete is quick to bald any wheel used for indoor skating. Also, be sure you wear your protective gear while skating, especially outside!
CONDITION! Get your core and your legs stronger now. We suggest starting with short sets of crunches, push-ups, squats, lunges and leg lifts. Start small and build up your sets slowly over a couple of weeks.
CARDIO! You will thank us for this tip later. Getting on skates is good but speed walking, jogging, taking an aerobics class, or spending some time on a stationary bike will also increase your endurance while you wait to begin Boot Camp.
LEARN! Get on the internet and look it up! There are many resources about derby, and You Tube has a ton of videos of derby in action!
